1.1 Human pathogens and zoonotic agents

Decision tree for defining relevant transport sheets

  • Human pathogens or zoonotic agents genetically modified or not, animals, including non-vertebrates, infected with such pathogens.
  • Human cell cultures, patient specimens, tissues, blood likely to be infected with human pathogens.

1a

Category A infectious substances according to the list of ADR 2.2.62.1.4.1:

  • Cultures of pathogens marked with "cultures only".
  • Cultures and patient specimens of all other pathogens.

Any other infectious substance which, when exposure to it occurs, is capable of causing permanent disability, life-threatening or fatal disease in otherwise healthy humans.

When in doubt whether the infectious substance does not meet the criteria listed above.

New or emerging pathogens which might meet the criteria above.

Waste of Category A infectious substances

Transport sheet 1.1.1a

1b

Patient specimens consisting of or containing Category A infectious substances marked with (cultures only) according to the list of ADR 2.2.62.1.4.1.

Cultures of Category A infectious substances marked with an "a" intended for diagnostic or clinical purposes according to the list of ADR 2.2.62.1.4.1.

Transport sheet 1.1.1b

2

Category B infectious substances (cultures, patient specimens) containing or consisting of human pathogens or zoonotic agents not listed as Category A infectious substance according to the list of ADR 2.2.62.1.4.1, or not falling under the criteria listed for transport sheet 1.1.1a or transport sheet 1.1.1b above.

Transport sheet 1.1.2

3

Medical or clinical waste consisting of or containing Category B human pathogens or zoonotic agents.

Transport sheet 1.1.3

3*

Medical or clinical waste which are reasonably believed to have a low probability of containing human pathogens or zoonotic agents.

Exemptions

4

Vertebrate animals infected with pathogens.

Transport sheet 1.1.4

5

Non-vertebrate animals infected with pathogens.

Transport sheet 1.1.5

6

Blood, primary cell cultures, tissue samples from animals infected with pathgogens.

Transport sheet 1.1.6

7

Animal carcasses and other waste from animal specimens infected with pathogens.

Transport sheet 1.1.7

8

Emerging pathogens and epidemics.
