Carcasses from genetically modified animals


1. Definition

Transport of genetically modified animals for the purpose of disposal only. Genetically modified animals are animals in which genetic material has been purposely altered through genetic engineering in a way that does not occur naturally.

Possibility of animal specimens and carcasses being unknowingly infected with pathogens.

6. Packaging

National, Ordinance on the disposal of animal by-products, annex I

  • Tightly closed packaging (small animals) or closed, tight, corrosion-resistant containers or vehicles (large animals) which can be easily decontaminated.

International

  • Import: as national.
  • Export: by the terms and conditions approved by the competent authority of the importing country.

Note: Genetically modified microorganisms and genetically modified organisms packed and marked in accordance with packing instruction P904 (ADR) and PI959 (IATA/ICAO) are not subject to any other requirement of ADR and IATA/ICAO, respectively.

National: Ordinance on the disposal of animal by-products, Annex I; Ordinance on the transport of wastes (VeVA)

  • Name and address of consigner and consignee, phone number of responsible person.
  • UN 3245
  • Hazard labels: UN label for class 9, miscellanous
  • Orientation arrows on two opposite sides 
  • If solid carbon dioxide is used: ‘Carbon dioxide, solid’ or ‘dry ice’
  • If liquid nitrogen is used: Hazad label for non-flammable, non-toxic gases
  • in case of disposal of animals:
  • "Nur zur Verbrennung", "exclusivement pour l'incinération"

International

8. Transport documents

National, Ordinance on the disposal of animal by-products, annex I

Transport document with following information:

  • name and address of sender;
  • name and address of shipper;
  • name and address of consignee;
  • date of collection of material;
  • description of material, including name of genetically modified organism and trait of genetic modification;
  • ‚Nur zur Verbrennung’, or ‚exclusivement pour l’incinération’ ;
  • if applicable, number of ear mark;
  • weight of material.

Transport document has to be provided as one original and two copies, one of each of the copies stays with the sender and with the shipper, the original stays with the consignee.

Note: A shipper's declaration for dangerous goods and instructions in writing are not required for UN 3245 if packed in accordance with P904

International

Private transport (national) or carrier

The transport with a private vehicle is possible up to a net quanitity of 333kg provided that the vehicle is equipped with a portable fire extinguisher.
